The route climbs a long, unmarked line up the Piyashiri River valley and a broad ridge to the snowed-in sightseeing road, and gentle road grades lead on to a log hut a few metres from the summit. The descent ridge threads trees and fallen trunks.

Piyashiri-yama stands above Nayoro within 30 km of the coldest place in Hokkaido, and in late January the air can fill with diamond dust. The tour starts at the Nayoro Piyashiri ski area and follows the Piyashiri River before climbing a steep bank onto a wide ridge. At about 750 m you reach the sightseeing road, buried for the winter, and follow its easy grade to the top.
The emergency hut beside the summit is open all year and costs nothing. It's drafty and has a small wood stove that needs about three hours before the room warms much, and the door may need digging out. Hokkaido Wilds recorded a whiteout under 30 m and windchill around minus 25 on its overnight, so carry a map and compass even on a short day. Nayoro Onsen Sunpillar sits across the road from the trailhead for the soak afterwards.
