Forest and an old logging road lead up to Shuen Ridge. The ridge is broad and gentle and climbs above treeline to the summit ridge, so expect 4–5 hours above the trees on wind-packed snow and creeping pine. The valley directly west of the summit gives the best descent when the snowpack is stable.
Watch for these hazards
- Strong wind and whiteout on a broad, featureless summit ridge where it is easy to descend the wrong spur
- Large cornice on the west side of the summit ridge
- Breakable crust and hard ice from wind and sun
- Deer fence at the start can trap riders who try to cut corners
- Brown bears wake from late March and are active by April
- No avalanche information service for this area

Shuen Ridge朱円尾根
1,296 m ascent · advanced
The standard tour crosses farm fields and forest to a logging road past the Junisen-gawa dam, then follows the long, gentle ridge to the summit. About 5 hours up and 1.5 hours down.
West valley below the summit

The open valley directly west of the summit gives the best skiing on the mountain in stable conditions. In doubtful snow, return along Shuen Ridge.

2019-03-21 · Hokkaido Wilds trip report
The road was plowed to the start, and the party stepped over the deer fence and followed an old forestry road to the Junisen-gawa dam at about 365 m. Warm days and cold nights had left breakable and icy crust.

A party of three entered from the Shari side on 20 March 2016. One member got separated in a blizzard and went down alone, and the other two turned back short of the summit and bivouacked in the trees after dark. One of them lost consciousness, the other walked out to call police at about 4:50 am, and the police record gives hypothermia as the cause of death.

Unabetsu-dake stands by itself at the base of the Shiretoko Peninsula and tops out at 1,419 m. In February and March drift ice from Siberia packs the Sea of Okhotsk below it, and the whole descent looks out over a white sea. Shari-dake rises to the southwest and the Shiretoko peaks run off to the northeast. Japanese guidebooks single out that view of the sea ice, and local riders talk about the mountain as a backcountry pilgrimage.
There is no summer trail, so people climb it on snow. The usual line leaves a forestry-road junction about 13 km east of central Shari, crosses a field to a deer fence and follows an old logging road up the valley past a dam. About 750 m beyond the dam you climb onto Shuen Ridge (朱円尾根). It is broad and gentle and carries you most of the way to the summit ridge. Hokkaido Wilds counts 16 km and close to 1,300 m of climbing for the day.
The mountain takes a lot of wind and gets relatively little snow. Crust is common, and on the Hokkaido Wilds visit the party turned around 300 m short of the top in wind and cloud. Come down the way you went up when the snowpack is unsettled. No avalanche service covers this corner of Hokkaido, and bears start moving in late March, so carry spray on spring tours.
