Which Sapporo ski hill should you ride?
Five ski areas sit inside Sapporo's city limits, and four of them keep riding after dark. Here's which one to ride, and when to take the bus to Kiroro instead.
By Adam BognarPublished
Sapporo Teine is the city hill for strong riders. It has the most vertical of the five and steep Olympic runs at Highland, and the JR ride to Teine Station takes 11 to 18 minutes from Sapporo Station. For an after-work session under lights, Sapporo Bankei sits closest and charges ¥2,000 for a night ticket, and Kiroro is the day trip when you want deep snow. Sapporo Kokusai runs no night riding, and Moiwayama keeps its terrain closed until at least 20 December 2026 while two lifts are rebuilt.
We compared the five ski areas inside Sapporo city with Kiroro on day and night prices, what a ticket covers, night-riding hours, terrain, the trip from Sapporo Station and how locals use each one.

Which Sapporo hill is best for strong riders?
Teine is the best for strong riders, because it has the most vertical in the city and Highland's runs are long and steep. The 1972 Olympic alpine races ran here. Kitakabe falls 1,500 m through forest at up to 36 degrees, and the resort's own notes warn there's no way out halfway down. The Olympic giant slalom course gives you two kilometres of fall line that steepens toward the finish. Our measurements put Teine's steepest pitch at 37.5 degrees on North Face, and 81 percent of its named-run length faces north or northeast.
Teine's published 2026/27 window price is ¥9,800 in high season and ¥8,800 online, and we couldn't verify the 2025/26 high-season price. Park at Highland if you came for the steeps, because the Eight Gondola back up from Olympia stops at 15:30 until mid-January. The Teine Gate beside the summit patrol hut is the only legal exit to the backcountry, and anyone leaving another way loses their ticket.
Where do you ride on a storm day?
Kokusai is the hill to chase when it's snowing. Its base sits at 630 m, and the SkyCabin8 gondola tops out at 1,100 m on the north shoulder of Asari-dake. No other ski area inside Sapporo's city limits reaches that high. The resort runs on natural snow alone from late November into early May, and Echo off the summit is the run it promotes for powder. A 2025/26 day cost ¥6,000 at the window or ¥5,700 online. The published 2026/27 prices rise to ¥7,000 and ¥6,700.
Kokusai bans riding outside the managed area and in the roped forest between runs, and it can suspend your ticket for it. The ski bus from Sapporo Station takes 1 hour 37 minutes and needs a reservation, and weekend parking near the base fills by about 08:30. If you stay at a hotel in Jozankei, the Jozankei Ski Liner runs you up for ¥2,800 return in 2026/27.
Which hill is best for night riding?
Bankei is the best night hill, because it's the closest to the city and its night ticket covers all ages at one price. The base sits 8.5 km from Sapporo Station. The Bankei Bus from Maruyama-Koen takes 13 minutes, and a taxi from downtown costs about ¥3,000. The lifts turn until 21:00 on weeknights and 22:00 on Saturdays. A night ticket costs ¥2,000, and a ¥7,000 day ticket carries straight into the night session.
Bankei's halfpipe is FIS-certified at about 180 m and hosted the Snowboard World Cup in March 2026. The Slalom Bahn averages 30 degrees over 270 m. Bankei rates 2 out of 5 for powder in our ratings, and its 283 m of vertical gets repetitive over a full day.
What changed at Moiwayama?
Moiwayama let snowboarders ride every course for the first time in 2025/26, after decades of refusing them. A new operator, Hokkaido Square, took over in April 2025 and added IC gates and a Hokkaido-resident day price of ¥4,100. Eight of its ten courses stay lit until 21:00 above the city. The night ticket cost ¥3,000 from 16:00 or ¥2,500 from 18:00. Karamatsu tips to 38 degrees on the north slope and stays unlit, so ride it in daylight.
There was no snowboard rental in that first season, so bring your own. Lifts 1 and 2 are being rebuilt, and the terrain stays closed until at least 20 December 2026. The operator hasn't announced 2026/27 prices.
Is Fu's worth the trip?
Fu's is worth it for the cheapest day in the city and one steep run. A 2025/26 day cost ¥3,300 for 09:00 to 16:00, and a separate ¥1,700 night ticket covers 16:00 to 21:00. By the resort's figures Dynamic drops 200 m over 1,200 m of fall line at an average of 28 degrees, and its steepest pitch reaches 38. Ride it early while the corduroy holds.
The city owns Fu's, and it sits in Fujino on Route 230 about half an hour from central Sapporo. Everything apart from Dynamic and Panorama is gentle. The day ticket stops at 16:00, so a full day and evening means buying twice.
Is Kiroro worth a day trip from Sapporo?
Kiroro is worth it on a powder day. It gets around 21 metres of snow a season at the summit and 12 to 16 metres at the base, and its four signed tree-run areas open 09:00 to 14:30 with a yukiyama app check-in. In 2025/26 the J-TRIP Powder Express left Sapporo Station at 7:00 and reached Kiroro at 8:15. Its ¥9,500 fare included the return bus and a 6-hour lift ticket. A high-season day ticket alone cost ¥8,800, and the drive takes about an hour via the Sasson Expressway.
Wind closes the gondola and the Asari No.2 Express first, and on those days Flashman off the Yoichi No.1 Express is the tree area most likely to stay open. Tickets from unauthorised resellers are void, so buy from the resort's webstore or a partner.
How do locals use the city hills?
Locals ride them in short, cheap sessions after work and school. At Teine, regulars buy the online-only 25-hour pass for ¥28,500 and spend it an hour at a time. Bankei's car park fills on weeknights with office workers and kids out of school, and Hokkaido residents save ¥1,300 on a Bankei day with ID. Generations of Sapporo children learned to ski at Moiwayama on school lessons. Moiwayama and Bankei both sell hour tickets that you can split across visits.
From 1 February 2026 a Bankei and Moiwa common day pass sold for ¥7,500 at either hill. In spring, Kokusai's cheap pass keeps Sapporo riders on the snow into May, and its free Kurutoku Club gives a free day for every five points.
How we compared
We read each hill's ticket, access and night-riding pages and its rules, the Chuo Bus ski-bus page and the J-TRIP bus page in October 2026. Prices are adult tickets for the season named, and resident discounts need Hokkaido ID. Steepest pitches marked as our measurement come from OpenStreetMap run lines with AWS Terrain Tiles elevation sampled every 20 m, and each one is the hardest 60 m of a run. OpenStreetMap carries no named runs for Fu's and only the tourist road for Moiwayama, so those cells read not measured. Ratings out of 5 are Ride Hokkaido's editorial scores. The method is desk research plus computed terrain data, and nobody rode these hills for this page.
