Getting there
In Oshidomari on Rishiri Island, about a 10-minute walk from the ferry terminal.
Rishiri is a single volcano rising out of the sea off Hokkaido's northern tip, and the town of Rishirifuji publishes its own safety guidance for people heading into the backcountry on it. Drillers found this spring 1,500 metres down at the foot of the mountain in 1996, and the town turned it into its public bath.
The spring comes up clear at about 41°C and tastes a little salty. The town heats it slightly and filters the tubs, topping them up with fresh source water all the time. From the rotenburo you look up at Rishiri-zan.
Most of the island uses it, from kids to fishermen coming off the boats, and in summer it's where hikers end up after the mountain. Entry is ¥500. From November to April it's closed on Wednesdays, which matters if you're timing a ferry.
