Toshiya Watanabe was born on Rishiri and came home in 2003 to help with the family hotel. A year later he started guiding winter backcountry tours on the island's volcano, and he runs them with his wife Maki from Pension Rera Mosir in Oshidomari. In the 2019 winter he took out more than 800 guests, and over 70 percent of them came from overseas.
Days run six to eight hours. A snowmobile drops the group at the foot of the climb, and he chooses the descent from that morning's snow. Prices aren't published, so write to the pension or book through a mainland outfit's Rishiri week. The ferry from Wakkanai takes about 1 hr 40 min and cancels in rough seas, so pad the trip with spare days.
