Tokachi Adventure Club runs winter backcountry tours out of Shintoku, and Sahoro's hotel lists them at its activity desk. The guides choose a zone each morning in the Hidaka or Tokachi hills and promise local spots. A tour costs ¥16,500 a head and lasts five to six hours. Snowshoes and an avalanche kit are lent free if you ask when you book.
Bookings happen in Japanese by phone on 0156-65-2727 or through the club's site. You need two people to run a tour, and everyone must be of high-school age or older. Boarders without a splitboard climb on the loaner snowshoes. Book by 17:00 the day before.
