Kinzo Takimoto brought his wife Sata to the springs for a skin condition and became their bath keeper in 1858. He opened the inn in 1888, and the onsen town grew up around it. It took the name Dai-ichi Takimotokan in 1953.
The Grand Bath is why you come. Its building covers about 1,500 tsubo (roughly 5,000 square metres) beside Jigokudani, and its 35 baths run on five spring types that range from milky acidic sulphur to an iron-red bicarbonate water. Yumori (bath keepers) watch the temperatures by hand. In a corner of the rotenburo, a small tub copies the one Kinzo built for Sata.
It's a big, busy hotel with buffet and kaiseki dining, and the bathhouse also has a heated pool. Check-in is 14:00 and check-out 10:00. The whole hotel shuts from 5 to 15 April 2027 for maintenance. Rusutsu is the nearest major mountain and takes well over an hour to reach.
