Ginrinsou is one of the few nishin goten (herring mansions) left on this coast where you can stay the night. Inomata Yasunojo built it in Yoichi in 1900 at the height of the herring boom. In 1938 it was taken down and raised again on Cape Hiraiso above Otaru, and the main building and the grill next door became registered tangible cultural properties in February 2023.
Rooms are split between the old main building and a newer wing, and the sea fills most of the windows. The open-air bath looks across Ishikari Bay and the Otaru rooftops, and now and then a Hakodate Line train sounds its horn below. Dinner is the heart of a stay. The house calls itself a ryotei (a restaurant inn), and you need to check in by 18:00 to eat.
Treat it as an evening more than a riding base. Asarigawa is the nearest hill and Kiroro is under an hour away. The inn runs a shuttle to JR Otaru-Chikko Station at check-in and check-out. The last pickup leaves at 18:00.
