At 1,280 metres on the flank of Tokachidake, Ryounkaku is Hokkaido's highest onsen inn and the classic base for touring the volcano.
Volcanic alert
Tokachidake is at volcanic alert level 3
The Japan Meteorological Agency raised Tokachidake to level 3 on 12 September 2026, which restricts entry around the crater. Fukiage Onsen Hakugin-so and the Fukiage Roten-no-yu outdoor bath are closed, and Ryounkaku has asked guests who couldn't evacuate quickly to stay away for now. Check the JMA bulletin before you plan any tour on the Tokachi range.

Ryounkaku is the last building on the road up Tokachidake, and touring starts from its car park. Check the volcano before you book. The Japan Meteorological Agency raised Tokachidake to alert level 3 (entry restrictions) on 12 September 2026. The inn stayed open and has asked anyone who would struggle to evacuate quickly to hold off for now, and any touring above it depends on the restrictions in force on the day.
Two springs feed the baths. One is iron-rich and turns a deep rusty brown, and the other is an acidic iron sulphate spring kept at a low temperature that regulars swear by. The men's and women's sides swap through the day, so you get both. In deep winter the outdoor bath can run cool and the acidic tub may close. Tattoos are fine in the baths if you cover them with a sheet or patch.
Rooms are simple, and most share toilets down the hall. Only the 12-tatami room and the luxury room have their own bathroom, so book early if that matters. Dinner is a set meal built around Kamifurano pork at 18:00 or 18:30. The last 5 km climbs steeply, and the inn asks for 4WD with studless tyres in winter. Furano is 45 minutes down the hill and Asahikawa Airport an hour.
