Shikotsuko Daiichi Hotel Suizantei

Suizantei stands in the little village at Shikotsuko Onsen. The buses from Chitose turn around in the village. The water here is a sodium bicarbonate spring that locals call bijin-no-yu (the beauty bath) for how soft it leaves your skin.
The rooms are the reason to book. Five garden suites of 80 to 105 square metres each come with a private rotenburo, and below them sit view-bath rooms and twins with small outdoor tubs. The shared bath pairs a rock rotenburo with an indoor tub of ancient hinoki cypress. After the sauna, the cold plunge runs on water drawn from the lake.
Two dining rooms handle the meals, and the inn makes its own tofu. A free car runs once a day from JR Chitose Station if you book it by 19:00 the day before. The inn takes guests aged 13 and over only, and it stopped day bathing in 2020. Check-in is from 15:00, and Rusutsu is about an hour away for a day on the hill.
