Is Sounkyo worth a night for riding Kurodake?
Sounkyo's onsen village sits on the floor of a basalt gorge, and the Kurodake Ropeway leaves from the top of its main street. Here's who should sleep there and what Kurodake costs in 2026/27.

Sounkyo is worth a night if you're an experienced rider heading through the Kurodake Gate with a guide, because the ropeway leaves from the top of the village and you can walk to the first car at 08:00. The lift-served ski area is one double chair with 220 m of vertical. Riders who want groomers should base in Asahikawa and ride Kamui instead.
The onsen village of Sounkyo fills the floor of a gorge on the upper Ishikari River, where columnar basalt cliffs rise around 200 m in places. In deep winter the waterfalls on its walls freeze into blue columns.

How do you get to Sounkyo?
Most riders come by car or on the Dohoku Bus. The Sounkyo Tourism Association lists the bus at about 110 minutes from Asahikawa Station and about 35 minutes from JR Kamikawa Station, and it warns that the timetable changed in July 2026. By car it's 66 km from Asahikawa on Route 39. The bus terminal sits a five-minute walk downhill from the ropeway. If you're booked at Sounkyo Choyotei, its operator runs reserved shuttles from Sapporo and Asahikawa.

What is riding Kurodake like?
Kurodake is steep, ungroomed alpine ground, and the lifts are how you reach the gate. The ropeway climbs from the village at 670 m to Kurodake Station at 1,300 m. A single chair carries you on to 1,520 m at the 7th Station, and the operator runs it in winter only for people carrying skis or a board. Nobody rides it downhill.
The operator's 2026/27 page plans the ski season from 1 December 2026 to 5 May 2027. The ropeway runs 08:00–16:00, and the last car up leaves 40 minutes before closing. A ¥5,200 adult day pass bundles a ropeway round trip with unlimited chair rides, and the ropeway alone costs ¥3,000 return. Come in January or February for cold powder and in April for spring snow.
What do you need to ride beyond the Kurodake Gate?
You need signed paperwork and your own touring kit, and you should go with a guide. Before you leave the boundary, sign the forest entry register and the Mountain Entry Consent in the 5th Station building. You can download the consent form and hand it in at the ropeway ticket window to save time. File a separate climbing plan with police as well.
The only exit is the Kurodake Gate immediately left of the chair's top station. The operator doesn't rescue anyone outside the controlled area, and you call 110 for help. Staff confiscate rental skis or snowshoes taken past the boundary along with the lift ticket, so bring your own kit. The slope under the ropeway down to the village isn't a ski course. Where do you soak after riding?
Kurodake no Yu suits riders coming straight off the ropeway. Kamikawa town runs it in the middle of the village, and entry is ¥800. From November to April it opens 11:00–21:30 with last entry at 21:00. The layout runs upside down, so the big indoor bath is downstairs and the rotenburo and sauna sit upstairs over the gorge. It's listed as refusing visible tattoos.
Sounkyo Choyotei is the big onsen hotel for a Kurodake stay. Its seventh-floor sky rotenburo faces Mount Choyo and the columnar cliffs, and it swaps between men and women through the day so everyone gets the view. The Keigetsu bath has a sauna for about 20 people. The water comes from the Sasa-no-yu source about a kilometre away at 74 °C. It suits riders who want a long soak after the ropeway. Dinner and breakfast are buffets, and the ropeway sits about a kilometre up the road each morning.
Where do you eat in Sounkyo?
Tozanken opened in 1930, and a young fourth-generation owner keeps the original flavour, according to the tourism association. Taisetsuzan Shokudo boils its broth hard for sixteen hours and kneads its noodles with Daisetsuzan spring water. Tree Bird is the shokudo for rice bowls, and its butadon and Genghis Khan set are the popular orders.
For a slower dinner, Beer Grill Canyon cooks Italian and Western dishes with local produce. It closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which catches a lot of midweek trips. Taisetsu Bakery in Hotel Taisetsu's east wing opens from 8:00 and turns into a bar at night. Black Mountain Coffee runs a café on the third floor of the ropeway base station, so you can wait for the first car with a coffee.
When is the Sounkyo Ice Fall Festival?
The festival builds lit ice halls and tunnels on the Ishikari riverbank from late January into early March. The 51st festival ran from 24 January to 8 March 2026, 17:00–21:30 on weekdays and 11:00–21:30 on weekends and holidays, and it asked for a ¥1,000 donation. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced by October 2026. Ginga and Ryusei Falls sit a few kilometres down the gorge and freeze into ice columns in deep winter.

Where does the name Sounkyo come from?
The writer Ōmachi Keigetsu named the gorge after his visit in 1921, according to Japanese Wikipedia's Sounkyo entry. Sounkyo means "gorge of layered clouds" in Japanese. The name is thought to borrow the sound of the Sounbetsu River at the gorge's entrance, which is so-un-pet in Ainu and means "the river with waterfalls". That borrowing is the usual explanation and remains unproven. Kamikawa town grew up at a place called Rubeshibe. That name comes from the Ainu ru-pespe and means "the path that goes down". The Ainu Association of Hokkaido lists two member associations in the Kamikawa district today.
What should you bring to Sounkyo?
Bring cash. The village has very few shops, and the nearest reliable foreign-card ATMs are in Kamikawa and Asahikawa. Stock up at the Kamikawa supermarkets on the way in. Rent alpine gear in Asahikawa, and let your guide supply or arrange touring and avalanche equipment.
How we put this together
In October 2026 we read the Kurodake Ropeway's pages, the Sounkyo Tourism Association's site, the Japanese Wikipedia entry and our fact sheets for Kurodake and the places to soak. Prices are adult fares. The method is desk research, and nobody visited Sounkyo for this piece.
