Hakodate Nanae sits on the slopes east of Lake Onuma, about fifty minutes north of Hakodate. A six-seat gondola climbs 3,319 metres to the top at 943 metres. From there Hokkaido Komagatake stands across the lake with its broken volcanic crown. The Seibu group opened the area in 1984, and the 1996 eruption of Komagatake closed it for a while. Suzuki Shokai has run it since the late 2000s as one of six ski areas across Hokkaido and Tohoku.
Most of the terrain is gentle. Shirakaba winds about four kilometres from the top, and the steepest pitch on the mountain reaches 29 degrees on Todomatsu. Strong riders will be done with the groomers by lunch. Come for the gondola and the empty runs. On Fridays to Sundays the lights stay on until 21:00.
