Rent a camper van and follow the snow around Hokkaido

A winter camper needs 4WD, studless tyres and a heater that keeps running after you switch the engine off. We compared 13 rental companies. 6 of them fit 4WD vans with that heater for winter, and 6 state studless tyres on their own site, so ask the rest to confirm tyres when you book. The map below shows where to sleep, wash and stock up, from RV parks with power to the toilet block at the nearest michi-no-eki.

Quick answersよくある質問

Can you rent a camper van in Hokkaido in winter?

Yes. 6 of the 13 rental companies we compared fit 4WD vans with a heater that runs with the engine off for winter. Ask the company to confirm studless tyres in writing when you book, and book early for February, because the 4WD vans go first.

How much does a camper van cost per day in Hokkaido in winter?

The cheapest winter-ready van we found starts around ¥11,000 a day at Fuji Cars Japan Chitose (Camper Wide daily rate, tax included; weekends add ¥5,100 a day and a ¥2,900 cleaning fee applies. The Cresson costs ¥20,000.). Add fuel, expressway tolls and RV park fees of roughly ¥2,000–¥5,000 a night.

Can you sleep overnight at a michi-no-eki in Hokkaido?

A michi-no-eki car park is there for drivers to rest, and sleeping in your vehicle to break a long drive is generally tolerated. Setting up camp is not: no chairs or awnings outside, no cooking, no running the generator, and leave in the morning. Some stations post their own rules, so read the sign.

Where is the best place to sleep in a camper van near Hokkaido ski resorts?

An RV park is the safest choice in winter, with power for the heater and a toilet nearby. We list 21 RV parks on the map above, and the closest ones to each ski area show in the table.
