Should you base a Kiroro trip in Otaru?
Otaru keeps its herring-era warehouses and sushi counters about fifty minutes by bus below Kiroro. Here's how the commute works in 2026/27 and how to spend the nights.

Otaru is the right base for Kiroro if you want a town to walk through at night and you can live by a bus timetable. In 2026/27 the resort bus takes about 50 minutes from the station area to Kiroro's Mountain Center for ¥2,200 each way. The last bus down leaves at 17:20 at the latest, so the timetable decides when your day ends.
Otaru also has its own short hill at Tenguyama and a street of sushi counters near the station. Its canal glows blue after dark until the end of January. We compared the ways up to the snow from town.
| Option | From Otaru | 2026/27 price | Suits | Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kiroro by resort bus | About 50 min from the Otaru Station main street | ¥2,200 one way; Kiroro day ticket ¥9,200 in high season | Riders without a car | Last bus down at 17:05 or 17:20 |
| Kiroro by taxi | About 40 min | From ¥12,000 one way | A group of four on a late start | No taxis wait at Kiroro |
| Tenguyama | City bus 9, 17–20 min | ¥3,500 day ticket | Half days and a harbour view | One pair lift; weekends only in March |
How do you get from Otaru to Kiroro without a car?
You take the resort bus, which Kiroro lists with its 2026/27 timetable. From 19 December 2026 to 14 March 2027 it runs every day. The first bus leaves Grand Park Otaru at 7:20 and collects riders along the canal hotels and at the Hokuriku Bank stop on Otaru Station's main street at 7:35. It reaches the Mountain Center at 8:25. Later buses leave that same stop at 8:00 and 8:40 and call at JR Otaru-Chikko Station on the way, and a 9:45 runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends until the end of February.
Coming down, buses leave the Mountain Center at 15:30 and 16:10 every day. Until the end of February, Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends add a 15:10 and a 17:20, while Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays get a 17:05. Adults pay ¥2,200 each way and children ¥1,600. The early season from 1 to 18 December and spring from 15 March to 25 April have fewer runs. A free shuttle covers opening weekend from 28 to 30 November. Kiroro listed its bus-and-lift packs as still in preparation in October 2026.
Kiroro is worth the commute. Our fact sheet puts its summit snowfall at about 21 metres a season, and its signed tree-run areas open 09:00–14:30 with a check-in on the yukiyama app. If you miss the bus, Otaru Tsubame Taxi quotes from ¥12,000 for the 40-minute ride, and Kiroro's own access page warns that no cabs wait at the resort.
Is Tenguyama worth riding?
Tenguyama is worth a half day when Kiroro is on wind hold or your flight leaves in the evening. Otaru Tenguyama runs a single pair lift, and a 2026/27 day ticket costs ¥3,500, the same as last season. The lift turns 09:00–15:00 from 19 to 31 December and 09:00–16:00 daily through February. In March it runs on weekends and holidays until 22 March 2027.
The steepest pitch reaches 40 degrees above the harbour, and the hill feels short on days when patrol closes the New course for unstable snow. Riding off the courses is prohibited. The operator asks skiers and snowboarders to use the pair lift, and the ropeway carries sightseers up for the night view until 20:00 for ¥2,000 return. Bus 9 leaves from stop 4 at the Otaru Station terminal and takes 17 to 20 minutes. Tenguyama has announced no night riding for 2026/27.
Where should you eat in Otaru after riding?
Book sushi first. Isezushi suits riders who plan ahead, because bookings open two months before the date at 11:00, by phone or through its online booking page. Courses ran from ¥8,500 to ¥22,000 a person in October 2026. It closes on Wednesdays and the first three Tuesdays of each month, so a short trip can miss it entirely. Children are welcome from age seven.
Masazushi has run its counter on Sushiya-dori since 1938. Sit at the counter and ask what came in that morning. It suits a long first night in town, and it costs more than an izakaya dinner.
Wakadori Jidai Naruto suits a hungry crew. It has deep-fried seasoned half chickens since 1952 a short walk from the station, and the long tables get loud by evening. Otaru's other habit is ankake yakisoba. The crisp noodles come under a thick sauce, and Ramen Otaruzaka in Wing Bay Otaru does a decent plate. The Sankaku Market beside the station opens every day, and its small diners serve seafood bowls from breakfast before the 7:35 bus.
What can you do in Otaru on a winter night?
Walk the canal. The Blue Canal lights the water between Asakusa-bashi and Chuo-bashi from sunset to 22:30, from 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027. The Snow Light Path follows from 6 to 13 February 2027, when candles and snow lanterns line the canal and the old Temiya railway line. Sakaimachi's glassworks and music box shops sit in Meiji-era stone buildings, and the street is at its emptiest once they shut.
Finish at Nikka Bar Rita in the Denuki Koji food alley. It pours Nikka from the Yoichi distillery up the coast and charges a ¥500 cover. It's closed on Tuesdays. Otaru Beer announced in October 2026 that its canal-side brewpub is closing for renovation, so check its reopening date before you plan a night there.

Where does the name Otaru come from?
Otaru comes from the Ainu ota-or-nay, which means "the river in the sandy beach", and the name first belonged to another shore. According to Japanese Wikipedia's Otaru entry, it described the lower Hoshioki River on today's Sapporo boundary, where the Matsumae domain opened its Otarunai trading post. Winter wind battered that site. The post moved west to a sheltered cove near today's Irifune, which the Ainu called Kuttar-us for the giant knotweed that grew there, and the old name went with it. The Otaru Ainu Association belongs to the Ainu Association of Hokkaido today.
Where should you stay in Otaru?
Tabist Kaihorow Otaru suits groups driving to Kiroro. Our fact sheet lists rooms from ¥14,000 (October 2026), breakfast comes with the room, and the deluxe quads fit four riders and their board bags. Kiroro is about 40 minutes up the hill by car, and the canal is a short walk down. Rooms are plain, and the ¥1,200-a-night car park can't be reserved, so arrive early.
Ginrinsou is a herring baron's mansion from 1900 that has stood on Cape Hiraiso above the city since 1938. It suits couples who want one long dinner and an open-air bath over Ishikari Bay. You must check in by 18:00 to eat, and the inn's shuttle runs only to JR Otaru-Chikko Station at check-in and check-out, which makes it awkward for a bus commute to Kiroro.
How we put this together
In October 2026 we read Kiroro's winter access page and its 2026/27 Otaru bus timetable, Tenguyama's hours and fees, the Otaru Tourism Association's winter and shop pages and the restaurants' own sites. Prices are adult fares and tickets for the season named. The method is desk research, and nobody visited Otaru for this piece.
