Nukabira Gensenkyo is a hot-spring village inside Daisetsuzan National Park, and the ski area sits close enough to walk from the inns. The national forestry agency bills its snow as some of the best powder in Japan. On a clear day you look out over the East Taisetsu peaks and Lake Nukabira as far as Mt. Meakan.
The mountain used to run 660 m of vertical from the top of Onsen-zan. Prince Hotels sold it in 2007 and the buyer went bankrupt the next year. A local hotel then took it on and gave it its current name. The second and third lifts have been suspended since 2015, so riding now happens on the lower courses only. In late March the area closes to the public for national junior alpine races.
