Akaigawa is a Japanese translation of the Ainu river name, so the sound itself is not Ainu. The village records several theories and adopts hure-pet (red river) as its official origin. It split from Ōe village (today's Niki) in 1899 and took the name Akaigawa-mura in 1906.

Akaigawa sits in the bowl of an ancient caldera with mountains on every side, which goes some way to explaining the snow. Moist air off the Sea of Japan piles into those mountains, and Kiroro takes the brunt of it high on the slopes of Mt. Asari and Mt. Nagamine. Down on the caldera floor the melon fields turn into a quiet white plain in winter, with farmhouses spaced far apart and very little traffic after dark.
Kiroro opened in 1991 and changed the village; its arrival quadrupled local tax revenue. Most visitors never see Akaigawa itself and stay up at the resort, where the hotels run their own restaurants and baths. If you have a car, drop down to Yamanaka Farm for a soft serve made from its own milk. The village's Caldera Onsen is a good soak on the drive home, and the roadside station by the Route 393 junction sells local vegetables.
