Which Hokkaido resorts have the best tree riding?
Each resort here sets its own rules for the forest, from open access at Rusutsu to sign-in armbands at Nayoro. We ranked them on the trees and the rules, and on what a day costs.
By Adam BognarPublished
Rusutsu Resort has the best lift-served tree riding in Hokkaido, because it opens its forest anywhere inside the boundary and 64 percent of its named-run length faces north by our measurements. Kamui Ski Links near Asahikawa runs gated tree courses in some of the coldest snow on the island for less than half Rusutsu's online price. Tree zones in Hokkaido hide stumps and tree wells under the snow, and several in this guide close by mid-afternoon, so ride with a partner and learn each resort's entry rules before you drop in.
We compared the seven lift-served resorts with a tree rating of 4 or 5 out of 5 in our fact sheet: Rusutsu, Niseko Village, Niseko Hanazono, Niseko Moiwa, Kamui Ski Links, Hoshino Resorts Tomamu and Nayoro Piyashiri. For each one we looked at how you get into the trees, how much terrain faces north, what a day costs and what goes wrong.
| Resort | Suits | How you get into the trees | Gladed runs in OSM / north-facing share (our measurement) | Adult day ticket | Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rusutsu | Intermediate and better riders who want free choice of line | Open anywhere inside the boundary | 11 / 64% | ¥16,200 window, ¥12,000 online (2025/26); covers three mountains | Highest walk-up price here, and Isola queues on powder mornings |
| Niseko Village | Advanced riders on storm days | Marked glades off the Niseko Gondola; G11 beyond | 1 / 1% | ¥9,700 Village only, ¥12,000 All Mountain (2025/26) | South-facing slopes take sun first |
| Niseko Hanazono | Mixed groups and families | Glades beside Hana 1; Strawberry Fields if patrol allows | 2 / 78% | ¥11,000 with Grand Hirafu (2025/26) | Strawberry Fields is missing from the official map |
| Niseko Moiwa | Strong riders who want quiet laps | Ungroomed birch slopes off the Quad; G6 beyond | 1 / 0% | ¥13,000 window, ¥11,700 online (2025/26) | Everything depends on one quad chair |
| Kamui Ski Links | Riders on a budget based in Asahikawa | Expert-only gates off Rindo and Renraku | 9 / 78% | ¥5,300 (2025/26) | Lift 5 stops at 15:00 |
| Tomamu | Families with one expert rider | Free Powder Area with app check-in and helmet | 2 / 3% | ¥8,000 counter, ¥7,700 online (2025/26) | Opens only from mid-January |
| Nayoro Piyashiri | Road-trippers who want cold, empty trees | Armband from the admin building | No named runs mapped | ¥4,300 window, ¥3,800 online (2026/27) | Two hours' drive north of Asahikawa |
Why is Rusutsu the first pick?
Rusutsu tops the list because its rules leave the whole forest to you. The resort permits tree riding anywhere inside the yellow-dotted boundary on its trail map, and a long list of official runs stays ungroomed. OpenStreetMap tags 11 Rusutsu runs as gladed, and no other resort we cover has more. After a storm the wind loads Heavenly Canyon's creek line on the back of Mt Isola, and the trees between East Vivaldi and East Tignes are where locals look first. West Mountain keeps a marked tree zone close to the hotel for younger riders.
It suits intermediate and better riders who want to pick their own line for a week. Rusutsu charged ¥16,200 at the window for a 2025/26 day and ¥12,000 online. The Isola Gondola line builds by mid-morning on powder days, so ride Furikozawa to the Isola base early. Our Niseko or Rusutsu comparison covers the trade in full.
Which Niseko glades work when wind shuts the upper lifts?
Niseko Village's glades below the Niseko Gondola work best on those days. Superstition drops from the top station and links through Jagaimo into Misoshiru for about two kilometres of ungroomed snow, and Misoshiru averages 25 degrees. When wind closes the Wonderland chairs above, the trees give you definition in flat light and the gondola keeps you out of the weather between laps. Advanced riders can go on through G11 into Mizuno-no-sawa when patrol opens it.
By our measurements only 1 percent of the Village's named-run length faces north. Its slopes run south and southeast, so the sun reaches them first after a storm clears.
Where do mixed groups find trees in Niseko?
Hanazono suits a group where some ride trees and some ride parks. The trees beside Hana 1 and the Symphony Gondola are the usual refuge in a storm, and Hana 1 is a heated six-seat chair with a bubble for the ride back up. Strawberry Fields is reached from Hanazono #2, and Blueberry Fields measures 33.4 degrees at its steepest in our data. By our measurements 78 percent of Hanazono's named-run length faces north or northeast, and no other Niseko United resort comes close.
Strawberry Fields is missing from the official map, so ask patrol each day whether it's open. Hanazono also scores 2 out of 5 on our crowd rating, because a good share of Niseko heads here when the peak stays shut.
Where are the quietest birch glades near Niseko?
Moiwa gives you the quietest trees in the Niseko area. It runs three chairs on its own ticket at the western end of the lifts, and the Shirakaba slopes stay ungroomed through the birch off the Quad. On a storm day you lap them with the same handful of regulars. Giant Run pitches to 35 degrees as an open face under the gates.
Moiwa's upper mountain depends on one quad chair, and the resort's news page shows how its 2025/26 season went: it opened on 13 December, stopped for weeks, came back on 24 January and closed around 25 March. The lower pairs only reach the bottom of the mountain. A regular-season day cost ¥13,000 at the counter, and the four-resort All Mountain pass cost ¥12,000.
Where can you ride gated trees for about ¥5,000?
Kamui Ski Links charges ¥5,300 a day and leaves about a third of its 26 courses ungroomed. Its tree courses start behind expert-only gates. Treerun and Bumps drop off the Rindo logging road, and Todomatsu has its own gate on Renraku. Deep Powder starts beside Lift 5. Royal Powder runs through the woods next to the gondola at up to 35 degrees, so you can judge the snow on the ride up. OpenStreetMap tags nine Kamui runs as gladed, and by our measurements 78 percent of its named-run length faces north or northwest.
It suits a rider based in Asahikawa who wants cold snow without Niseko prices. Expect fallen logs and sudden steps under the snow in every tree course. Lift 5 stops at 15:00, and Deep Powder opens only for limited periods.
Which resort gives you free in-bounds powder zones?
Tomamu opens its Experts Only Powder Area to any advanced rider at no extra cost. From mid-January to 31 March patrol releases ungroomed tree zones on Tomamu Mountain in stages. You check in on the yukiyama app with GPS on and enter a password from the Snow Kart counter. Helmets are compulsory, and the last entry is 15:00. The rest of the family can ride Tower Mountain or swim at Mina-Mina Beach.
Nothing opens before mid-January, and the app won't register you on hotel Wi-Fi alone, so you need a phone with its own data plan. Tomamu's slopes face mostly southeast, and only 3 percent of its named-run length faces north by our measurements.
Where are the coldest, emptiest trees?
Nayoro Piyashiri has them, in one of the coldest basins in Hokkaido. Winter nights here can drop below minus 30. Four tree-run zones open inside the boundary, and the longest runs about 1,400 m. You sign in at the admin building and ride with the armband and a helmet on. The band goes back by 15:30, or patrol starts a search. The zones close at 15:00, and patrol won't sweep them at closing, so bring a partner.
It suits a rider on a road trip north who wants dry snow and quiet. Nayoro sits about two hours' drive from Asahikawa and three from Sapporo, and that distance is the drawback on a short trip. A 2026/27 day costs ¥4,300 at the window or ¥3,800 online, and the onsen pack adds a bath at Sunpillar beside the base.
What about Kiroro and the cat-skiing operations?
Kiroro rates 3 for trees in our fact sheet, and its four signed tree-run areas deserve a look on a deep day. Powder Ridge and Orange Light sit off the top of Asari. Flashman runs down the Yoichi area, and Barcode spreads across Nagamine. They open 09:00 to 14:30 with a yukiyama check-in, and Flashman stays reachable when wind stops the gondola.
If you'd rather share the trees only with your own group, the snowcats run at Chisenupuri and Iwanai Resort. Chisenupuri's 2026/27 day costs ¥175,000 a person with lunch and Niseko transfers included. The ticket also covers a soak at Yukichichibu Onsen afterwards. Iwanai's costs ¥200,000 a person and includes Niseko transfers.
How we compared
We shortlisted every lift-served resort rated 4 or 5 for trees in the Ride Hokkaido fact sheet. We then read each one's tree-zone rules alongside its trail map and ticket page in October 2026. Ratings out of 5 are our editorial scores from that research. Gladed-run counts come from OpenStreetMap tags. North-facing share is our measurement of the named-run length whose longest section faces somewhere between northwest and northeast, computed from OpenStreetMap run lines and AWS Terrain Tiles elevation sampled every 20 m. Prices are adult day tickets for the season named. The method is desk research plus computed terrain data, and nobody rode these trees for this page.
