Should you ride Niseko or Rusutsu?
Mt Yotei stands between them, and the road around it takes half an hour. We set the trees, tickets, gates and buses side by side so you can pick one for the week.
By Adam BognarPublished
Choose Rusutsu Resort for a trip built around tree riding, because it lets you into the forest anywhere inside its boundary and 64 percent of its named-run length faces north by our measurements. Niseko United fits a group that wants four resorts on one ticket and a village with bars and late restaurants at the bottom of them, and its gates onto Niseko Annupuri give it the better backcountry. Rusutsu only holds up on price if you buy online or arrive with an Epic Pass, since its 2025/26 window day ticket cost ¥16,200 and the online price was ¥12,000.
We compared Rusutsu with the four Niseko United resorts (Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri) on trees and terrain, tickets and what they cover, night riding, backcountry rules, crowds, transport and beds. Niseko Moiwa sells its own ticket, so it comes up only where it changes the answer.

Which resort has the better tree riding?
Rusutsu has the better tree riding, and its rules explain most of it. The resort permits tree riding anywhere inside the yellow-dotted boundary on its map and leaves a long list of official runs ungroomed. OpenStreetMap tags 11 Rusutsu runs as gladed, and the four United resorts carry eight between them. After a storm, Heavenly Canyon follows a wind-loaded creek line off the back of Mt Isola, and locals head for the trees between East Vivaldi and East Tignes.
By our measurements 64 percent of Rusutsu's named-run length faces somewhere between northwest and northeast, and those slopes keep cold snow longest once the sun returns. Grand Hirafu looks east toward Yotei with only 5 percent of its named runs facing north. Hanazono reaches 78 percent, and its trees beside Hana 1 and the gondola pull in a good share of Niseko on storm days.
Inside Niseko United, the longest linked glades we found sit below the Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village. Superstition links through Jagaimo into Misoshiru there for about two kilometres of ungroomed snow. Hanazono's Strawberry Fields is missing from the official map, so ask patrol each morning whether it's open. Our tree riding roundup ranks all of them.
Which has more terrain and steeper pitches?
Niseko United has more terrain and more vertical. Our OpenStreetMap measurement counts about 67 km of marked piste across the four United resorts and about 37 km at Rusutsu. Grand Hirafu publishes 940 m of vertical from its 260 m base to the top of King Single #4, and Rusutsu publishes 594 m on Mt Isola.
Rusutsu holds the steeper single pitch. Super East measures 36.4 degrees over its hardest 60 m in our data, though the resort quotes 40. The steepest named run we measured anywhere in Niseko United is Blueberry Fields at Hanazono at 33.4 degrees.
Niseko also reaches higher. On a clear morning after snow, King #3 and King #4 carry you to the G3 gate at 1,180 m, and the 1,308 m summit of Niseko Annupuri is 20 to 50 minutes of bootpacking above it. Rusutsu tops out at 994 m with nothing lift-served higher.
How do lift tickets and passes compare?
Niseko costs less at the window, and online the two sit ¥600 apart. For 2025/26 the Niseko United All Mountain day ticket cost ¥12,000 at the counter or ¥11,400 online, and it covered all four resorts and the free United shuttle between them. Riders who stay on one side pay less again. The Grand Hirafu and Hanazono ticket was ¥11,000, and Annupuri sold the cheapest single-resort day in United at ¥7,000.
Rusutsu's day ticket covers its three mountains. In 2025/26 it was ¥16,200 at the window and ¥12,000 online, and night riding on West Mountain needed its own ¥3,800 ticket. For 2026/27 Rusutsu lists ¥16,700 at the window and ¥13,200 online. Niseko United brings in a peak tier from 24 December to 28 February that lifts the All Mountain day to ¥13,500.
Ikon and Mountain Collective both cover the four United resorts. The Epic Pass gives five consecutive days at Rusutsu with no blackouts, and you redeem it at a ticket window because the My Epic phone pass won't scan at the lifts.
Where do you go when you want backcountry?
Go to Niseko, because its gates give lift-served access under one published set of rules. The Niseko Rules let you leave the ski area only through an open gate with a helmet and an avalanche transceiver, and search and rescue is billed from ¥100,000. The gates are numbered across the mountain: G3 and G4 at the Hirafu peak, G5 and G9 at Hanazono, G11 into Mizuno-no-sawa from the Village, and G1, G2, G7 and G8 at Annupuri. Read the Niseko Avalanche Information report before you ride. It's written from 6:00 observations, and the gate boards at the lift bases have the final word.
Rusutsu runs no gate system. Its boundary marks the end of patrolled terrain, and the south face of Shiribetsu-dake starts from the resort car park. Hokkaido Wilds rates its slopes the most hazardous in the greater Niseko area, so book a guide for it.
Which is busier?
Grand Hirafu is the busiest base in this comparison, and Rusutsu draws more people than its farm-village setting suggests. Our crowd rating gives Hirafu 1 out of 5 and Rusutsu 3. King Single #4 is the only lift to Hirafu's peak gates, so on a clear morning after snow a big part of the village queues for the same chair. Niseko Village's gondola line reaches about 20 minutes between Christmas and late January and again around Chinese New Year.
At Rusutsu the queues form at Mt Isola. The resort's own advice is to ride Furikozawa to the Isola base early and join the gondola line before mid-morning. On selected days a Mt Isola First Track ticket loads the gondola at 8:45 for 60 riders.
How do you get there without a car?
Rusutsu is the quicker bus ride from New Chitose Airport. Kamori's BIGRUNS bus takes about two hours and costs ¥5,000 booked online at least seven days ahead, or ¥5,500 otherwise. The Hokkaido Resort Liner reaches the Hirafu Welcome Center in about three and a half hours for ¥6,000 (2025/26). JR trains through Sapporo and Otaru get you to Kutchan in 3 to 3.5 hours for ¥2,880. No railway reaches Rusutsu.
Inside Niseko, the free United shuttle links Hirafu with the Village and Annupuri for All Mountain holders, and the Hanazono shuttle leaves the Welcome Center about every 20 minutes. The full picture for each base is in Hokkaido without a car.
Can you ride both on one trip?
You can, because the two sit close enough for a day trip. The drive takes about 30 minutes from Niseko or 35 from Kutchan, and a taxi from Kutchan Station runs about ¥12,300. In January and February 2026 a Rusutsu Powder Day Trip bus left the Hirafu Welcome Center at 8:30, reached East Mountain at 9:15 and cost ¥9,000 return. Ikon holders who want the Rusutsu trees should buy that day online.
Where should you sleep?
At Rusutsu you sleep at the resort or close to it. The Westin Rusutsu Resort gives every room two levels and runs its own Tower Pair lift onto East Mountain. The Rusutsu Resort Hotel & Convention stands at the foot of West Mountain, and its sixth-floor outdoor bath is 20 metres wide. Pension Clydesdale cooks Italian dinners with Rusutsu pork a kilometre past the resort. Rusutsu village has about 2,000 residents and little nightlife. Mokumoku-ya in Izumikawa grills thick-cut lamb a short drive from the hotels and takes cash only.
Niseko gives you far more choice. Hirafu puts you within walking distance of the lifts and most of the bars, and Kutchan trades a 20-minute bus ride for supermarket prices. Our Niseko base guide compares every option with named stays.
How we compared
In October 2026 we checked each resort's ticket, trail-map, access and rules pages along with the Niseko United and Niseko avalanche sites and guide sources. Prices are adult day tickets for 2025/26 unless we name a later season. Figures marked as our measurements come from OpenStreetMap run lines with AWS Terrain Tiles elevation sampled every 20 m. The steepest pitch is the hardest 60 m of a run, and the aspect is the direction a run's longest section faces. Ratings out of 5 for crowds and trees are Ride Hokkaido's editorial scores from that research. The method is desk research plus computed terrain data, and nobody rode these runs for this page.
