Tomamu sits in a high, empty valley in the middle of Hokkaido, and the cold hits you before anything else. The resort has recorded −35°C, and a January morning at 8 am averages −12°C. Snow that falls through air like that stays dry and light. On clear mornings the trees around the gondola top come out coated in rime, and the resort counted frost trees on 63% of days in 2025/26.
The ski area spreads across two ridges. Tomamu Mountain carries the gondola and the fast quads, and every steep run on the map lives there. No Gravity tilts to 35° beside the Powder Express. Tower Mountain rises behind the hotel towers and handles the easy cruising and the night session. Twenty-nine courses and 585 m of vertical sound small next to the size of the hotels. Advanced riders seldom bother with the Tower side, so pitches like Grand Prix Z can hold powder into the afternoon.

Most riders who know Tomamu come for the Experts Only Powder Area. From mid-January the resort opens designated off-piste zones in the trees on Tomamu Mountain, and it frames the whole idea as a Winter Mountain Liberation Declaration. Entry costs nothing. You check in on the yukiyama app, join the powder group, accept the terms and type in a password from the Snow Kart counter in the Resort Center. A helmet is compulsory, and the last entry is at 15:00.
The resort also sells guided days with Riki Nakajima's team, from a two-hour Step to Back Country session in the resort-controlled zone at ¥20,000 up to a Sunrise BC Tour that starts hiking at 3:00 in the dark. On winter weekends a snowcat takes riders up Karifuri-dake about 20 minutes away for 4–6 laps of 200–500 m with lunch in a yurt. That day costs ¥110,000 for 2026/27.
There is no town at the bottom, so the evenings happen in the hotels and along hotalu street. Down at the Tomamu Mountain base, Club Med runs its own all-inclusive village. Mina-Mina Beach keeps a 30 by 80 m wave pool above 30°C. Next door at Kirin-no-Yu you can soak outside in the snow, and in deep winter the Ice Village goes up with an ice bar and an ice hotel. The limited express from Sapporo reaches JR Tomamu in about 100 minutes, and a free bus meets every train.
