Is Kiroro worth a whole week of your Hokkaido trip?
Kiroro gets more snow than any other Hokkaido resort that publishes a figure, and most riders only see it on a day trip from Sapporo. We checked whether the basin above Akaigawa can carry a week.
By Adam BognarPublished

Kiroro holds up for a week if snow matters more to you than nightlife. It sits in a basin that catches north-westerly storms off the Sea of Japan, and in January its tree-run areas and long groomers refill most nights. Wind closes the gondola and the top chair on Asari before anything else, so a week here needs a plan for the days when the upper mountain shuts.
Most riders see Kiroro from a bus out of Sapporo. They ride for six hours and leave, and our Sapporo city hills guide covers that day trip. Here we look at a week spent at the base. We compiled it from Kiroro's ticket, hours, access and rules pages plus guide sources, and we computed the terrain figures from OpenStreetMap run lines and elevation data. Nobody from Ride Hokkaido rode Kiroro for this piece.

How much snow does Kiroro get?
Kiroro quotes an annual average of about 21 metres, and that figure was measured near the summit. Base records from 2014 to 2019 run from about 12 to 16 metres a season. The Japanese guide site Steep publishes monthly averages for the last three seasons that add up to about 14.6 metres between December and April, with December and January each close to 4.4 metres. Steep also says snow falls almost every night in peak season. Book December or January if you want the best odds of new snow on most mornings of your week.

Which part of the mountain should you ride first?
Start on Asari. The Kiroro Gondola climbs 3.3 kilometres to the top of the resort, and in 2025/26 it ran from 09:00 to 15:00 until 13 February and to 15:30 after that, according to the operating hours page. Expert A and Expert B stay ungroomed off the top and reach a published 34.6 degrees. Asari Course 2-C is the steepest course on the map at a published 36.8 degrees, and our measurement gives it 34.3 degrees over its hardest 60 metres. The trail map marks a Freeride World Qualifier slope beside 2-B.
Take Asari Dynamic first once patrol opens the top. It winds 4,050 metres from the gondola top to the base. By our measurements 78 percent of Kiroro's named-run length faces somewhere between west and north, and 41 percent faces between northwest and northeast, so much of the mountain keeps cold snow for a day or two after a storm clears.
By midday the gondola line grows, and Nagamine is the place to go. Nagamine Course 2-A carries the steepest average pitch on the map at 18.2 degrees over a kilometre. Cafe Crest at the top of the Nagamine No.1 Express pours good coffee.
What do you do when wind closes the top?
Ride Flashman. The Yoichi No.1 Express climbs 1,766 metres to a 900-metre top, and it has kept turning at reduced speed on days when the gondola stood still. Flashman runs down through the trees beside it, and Yoichi Course 1-B gives you 2,050 metres of groomed riding at up to a published 25.4 degrees. Center Course C off the Center Express stays ungroomed and reaches 26.6 degrees, and its short lift lets you test the snow close to the base. Over seven days, expect a wind hold on some of them, and check the lift dashboard before you boot up.
Where are the tree-run areas, and what are the rules?
Kiroro limits off-piste riding inside its boundary to signed tree-run areas. Our fact sheet lists Powder Ridge and Orange Light off the top of Asari, Flashman in the Yoichi area and Barcode on Nagamine for 2025/26. Steep counts five areas spread across the Asari, Yoichi, Center and Nagamine sectors, so check the tree-run map at the base on day one. They open from 09:00 to 14:30 for advanced riders, and you need the yukiyama app on your phone before you go in. Patrol uses it to find riders who need help. Any rescue inside a tree area is billed to you, and Kiroro strongly recommends a helmet. The lifts keep running for at least an hour after the trees close.

Can you reach the backcountry from Kiroro?
You can, through the designated gates only. The resort policy asks for a climbing plan filed with Hokkaido Police first, and the Compass online system works in English. Ducking a rope can cost you your lift ticket, and hiking uphill inside the boundary is banned. The gate beside the upper station of the Gateway Express leads into unpatrolled terrain west of the Mountain Center. Hokkaido Wilds describes tours there to the 1,107-metre and 992-metre peaks, and a fatal avalanche happened in that area in 2021. Yoichi-dake rises to 1,488 metres south of the resort on skins. Yoichi Peak on the trail map is a different place, and it tops out at 900 metres above the Yoichi lifts.
What does a week of lift tickets cost?
For 2026/27 Kiroro lists an adult day at ¥9,200 in high season, which runs from 12 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, and ¥5,800 in the early and spring periods. A 7-day pass costs ¥64,400 in high season, and the days don't have to run in a row. The night pass costs ¥3,000. In 2025/26 the high-season day cost ¥8,800 and the early and spring day ¥5,500. The official webstore takes up to 5 percent off daily passes, and passes from unauthorised resellers don't work at the gates. Every pass loads onto a KIROCA card with a ¥500 deposit. Kiroro is on the Indy Pass and in the Powder Alliance, and Club Med packages include the lift pass.

Where do you sleep and eat?
You sleep at the base or down in Otaru. Club Med Kiroro Peak sits at the foot of the main lifts in the old Sheraton building and puts the lift pass, lessons, meals and drinks into one price. It's aimed at adults and teens. Club Med Kiroro Grand takes families and keeps an outdoor onsen. Yu Kiroro rents condominium units beside the Gateway Express for groups who want a kitchen.
Brasserie Akaigawa at the gondola base does ramen and curry at lunch. Evenings stay quiet in the basin. Otaru has the sushi counters and the canal 40 minutes down the road, and Tabist Kaihorow Otaru is a well-priced bed there. No taxis wait at Kiroro, and a cab from Otaru costs from ¥12,000 one way, so book the ride back before you go up.
How do you get to Kiroro?
Kiroro is about an hour by car from Sapporo over the Sasson Expressway and Route 393, and about 1 hour 45 minutes from New Chitose Airport. There are no rental-car counters at the resort. For 2026/27 the winter access page lists the Kiroro Ski Bus from Sapporo from 10 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 and the Kiroro Powder Express from 19 December 2026 to 28 February 2027. Powder Express riders board the gondola from 08:45, fifteen minutes before the public. A bus from Otaru runs from 28 November 2026 to 25 April 2027. A bus from the Hirafu Welcome Center in Niseko runs on selected days between 20 December 2026 and 20 February 2027. Our guide to Hokkaido without a car puts these routes beside the other resorts.

How we researched this
In October 2026 we read Kiroro's ticket, hours, access, guide-map and policy pages and the guide sources listed below. Prices are adult tickets for the season named. Figures marked as our measurements come from OpenStreetMap run lines with AWS Terrain Tiles elevation sampled every 20 metres. The steepest pitch is the hardest 60 metres of a run, and aspect is the direction a run's longest section faces. OpenStreetMap maps some long runs in sections, so we compare our figures only with each other.
Quick answers
Is Kiroro good for a week-long ski trip?
Kiroro suits a week-long trip for riders who rank snow above nightlife. Kiroro publishes about 21 metres of annual snowfall measured near the summit and 660 metres of vertical across 23 courses. Both resort hotels run as Club Med, so evenings stay quiet, and Otaru is about 40 minutes away by road.
What happens at Kiroro when the wind closes the gondola?
When wind closes the Kiroro Gondola, the Yoichi No.1 Express is the lift most likely to keep running at Kiroro, sometimes at reduced speed. It climbs 1,766 metres to a 900-metre top and reaches the Flashman tree-run area and the 2,050-metre Yoichi Course 1-B.
How much is a Kiroro lift ticket in 2026/27?
A Kiroro adult day ticket costs ¥9,200 in the 2026/27 high season, from 12 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, and ¥5,800 in the early and spring periods. A 7-day high-season pass costs ¥64,400, and every Kiroro pass needs a ¥500 refundable KIROCA card deposit.
Can you ride the backcountry from Kiroro?
Kiroro allows backcountry riding only through its designated gates, after you file a climbing plan with Hokkaido Police. The terrain past the gate beside the Gateway Express has no lifts, so riders need skins and avalanche gear for it.
