Read the terrain
A wooded gully along the Shiraidake-sawa stream climbs through mild spurs into well-spaced old white birch. The summit ridge at about 1,100 m joins Shirai-dake to Asari-dake, and the best skiing is the top half of the north side.
Watch for these hazards
- The upper bowl directly north of Shirai-dake is known avalanche terrain
- Terrain traps in the many gullies
- Thin snow bridges at creek crossings early in the season
- Confusing spurs and gullies in poor visibility; carry map, compass and GPS
- Exposed, windy summit ridge with small cornices
- Whiteout on Asari-dake's flat summit, which locals call the airfield

Asari-dake and the horseshoe from the gondola top (guided)朝里岳
advanced
Guided parties ride the Kokusai gondola, check beacons at the top station and tour onto Asari-dake (1,281 m), the 1,117 m bump toward Tsurigane ridge and the south face of Shirai-dake. This conflicts with the resort's written terms, so go with a local guide who knows the current arrangement.

In a thin season the party followed an established skin track from the staff parking up the Asaridake-sawa gully, stepping aside for sidecountry riders coming down. The horseshoe from Asari-dake to Shirai-dake takes nearly two hours on its own.

Shirai-dake sits at the south end of a horseshoe ridge that curls around Sapporo Kokusai from Asari-dake. With Yoichi-dake the two peaks make up the Yoichi Three Peaks, and Sapporo skiers have toured them since the Taisho era. The tour starts in the Kokusai car park. You walk past the bottom of the gondola through the staff parking and head up the Shiraidake-sawa stream.
The lower half winds through a gully with two creek crossings and a steep-sided traverse around 730 metres. A third of the way up the forest thins into old white birch spaced wide enough to ride. The summit ridge meets you at about 1,100 metres, and the top is twenty minutes of flat walking from there. Ski the upper half of the north side, then keep off the gully floors on the way out.
Kokusai's terms ban riding outside its managed area and hiking up its pistes. Climbing from the top lift toward Asari-dake is frowned upon, and the ridge from Asari-dake to Shirai-dake takes about two hours anyway. Guided groups do run tours onto Asari-dake from the gondola top after lodging an entry notice at the resort. Asari-dake's broad summit has a long history of parties walking in circles in blizzards.
