Getting there
About 8 km northwest of Noboribetsu Onsen on Route 2; around 20 minutes from the Noboribetsu-Higashi expressway exit.
Karurusu sits about eight kilometres up the Noboribetsu River from the big resort, below Raiba-dake and the Orofure range, and a handful of inns line the water. It took its name from Karlsbad in Bohemia because the chemistry looked similar, and in 1957 it became the first designated National Health Hot Spring in Hokkaido.
The water is a clear, neutral simple spring that comes up hot and carries more Glauber's salt than most simple springs. After a few days of Noboribetsu's acid baths it feels gentle on the skin. Suzuki Ryokan sells day entry for ¥500 in the afternoon and evening.
Karurusu Onsen Sanraiba ski area opened on Raiba-dake in 1961 and still serves as the village hill, so you can take some laps and soak in the same afternoon. If Suzuki is busy, Yumoto Oroferesou and Mori-no-yu Sanseikan both take day bathers for ¥600.
