Tattoo rules vary by hotel; Toya Sun Palace is listed as refusing visible tattoos, so ask at each desk. Some hotels rent towel sets for ¥300–¥400.
Getting there
On the south shore of Lake Toya; about 50 minutes from Niseko and about 1 hr 15 min from New Chitose by expressway.
The springs at Lake Toya only appeared in 1917, after Usu-zan pushed up a new dome in its 1910 eruption, and the town grew along the south shore once a railway reached it in 1929. Usu erupted again as recently as 2000, and the hotels still sit in a row facing the caldera lake.
The water is a salty calcium chloride spring that comes up at 50°C, slightly cloudy and yellow, with a little fizz if you taste it. Most hotels sell day entry. The tourism association's April 2026 list has Hotel Grand Toya at ¥600 and the Hokkai Hotel at ¥500 for the afternoon and evening, while the big resort hotels ask up to ¥2,000.
Toya is the soak on the way back from Rusutsu. Free foot and hand baths sit along the shore, including Toryu-no-yu by the lake, which is closed for maintenance from 13 to 30 October 2026. The nightly fireworks over the water start again in late April.
