Fukiage is the free, mixed rock pool in the woods above Kamifurano where Tokachidake tours end, and it has been closed since September 2026 under a volcanic alert.
Volcanic alert
Tokachidake is at volcanic alert level 3
The Japan Meteorological Agency raised Tokachidake to level 3 on 12 September 2026, which restricts entry around the crater. Fukiage Onsen Hakugin-so and the Fukiage Roten-no-yu outdoor bath are closed, and Ryounkaku has asked guests who couldn't evacuate quickly to stay away for now. Check the JMA bulletin before you plan any tour on the Tokachi range.

Know before you bathe
Unstaffed and free, with no posted tattoo rule. There is no changing room, so bring a towel wrap or swimsuit if you want one. Rinse off with a little bath water before you get in, keep voices down and carry out everything you bring.
Getting there
Normally reached from Kamifurano on Route 291 to Hakuginso, then about five minutes on foot through the trees; a dozen-odd parking spaces and basic toilets, no lighting. Route 966 has been closed since 12 September 2026 and the town bus no longer runs to Fukiage.
Fukiage Roten-no-yu is a rock pool built on a slab of bedrock in the woods, about five minutes' walk from Hakuginso, with a small waterfall pouring down right beside it. Changing happens on the rocks, and at night you find your way by headlamp because the site has no lighting at all. It costs nothing and it's open around the clock, which made it the standard finish to a day of touring on the Tokachidake side.
It got famous in 1995, when the drama Kita no Kuni kara filmed Rie Miyazawa bathing here, and weekends have been busy ever since. The spring is acidic at pH 2.6 and leaves the mountain at 47°C, clear and odourless, with nothing added. The tourism association suggests women wear a swimsuit or a towel wrap.
For now it's off limits. On 12 September 2026 the Japan Meteorological Agency raised Tokachidake to Level 3, the Fukiage area came under an evacuation order, and Fukiage closed along with Hakuginso and its campground. Route 966 is shut too. Watch the Kamifurano town website for the alert level before you plan on soaking here this winter.
