Volcanic alert
Tokachidake is at volcanic alert level 3
The Japan Meteorological Agency raised Tokachidake to level 3 on 12 September 2026, which restricts entry around the crater. Fukiage Onsen Hakugin-so and the Fukiage Roten-no-yu outdoor bath are closed, and Ryounkaku has asked guests who couldn't evacuate quickly to stay away for now. Check the JMA bulletin before you plan any tour on the Tokachi range.

Getting there
At the end of the road above Kamifurano at 1,280 m, about 20 parking spaces. Town bus from Kamifurano about 40 minutes. As of October 2026 the area is under an evacuation advisory for elderly and assisted people because of the Tokachidake Level 3 alert; the inn sits outside the restricted zone and is operating.
Ryounkaku sits at 1,280 metres where the road ends above Kamifurano, and no onsen inn in Hokkaido is higher. The car park doubles as a trailhead, so in a normal winter touring parties skin out from right beside the building.
Two sources feed the baths. One is heavy with iron and turns rust brown, and the other is sharply acidic at pH 2.4, though in winter the acidic one is sometimes switched off. The men's rotenburo looks across at the Tokachidake range, and the women's outdoor bath is built like a cave. The outdoor water runs cool in deep winter, and the inn posts the day's temperatures on its website, so warm up indoors first.
Mind the volcano this season. Tokachidake went to Level 3 on 12 September 2026, which closes the mountain within about 3 km of the 62-2 crater. Ryounkaku is outside that line and keeps running, though the town has issued an evacuation advisory for anyone who would struggle to leave quickly, and the inn asks those guests to stay elsewhere for now. Touring inside the restricted zone is off until the level drops.
