Hakuginso is Kamifurano's town bathhouse and bunk lodge at the foot of the Tokachidake touring terrain, closed since September 2026 under a volcanic evacuation order.

Tokachidake is at volcanic alert level 3
The Japan Meteorological Agency raised Tokachidake to level 3 on 12 September 2026, which restricts entry around the crater. Fukiage Onsen Hakugin-so and the Fukiage Roten-no-yu outdoor bath are closed, and Ryounkaku has asked guests who couldn't evacuate quickly to stay away for now. Check the JMA bulletin before you plan any tour on the Tokachi range.

Know before you bathe

Getting there
Route 291 from Kamifurano, about 30 minutes by car or town bus. Route 966 west toward Biei closes every winter. Since 12 September 2026 the Fukiage area has been under an evacuation order and the town bus stops short of Hakuginso.
Hakuginso is a town-run bathhouse with cheap shared bunkrooms and a self-catering kitchen, and for years it has been the base for skiers and splitboarders touring the Tokachidake range. Beds cost ¥3,100 a night and you cook your own food. Eight tubs split between the men's and women's sides, including a big garden-style rotenburo where snow piles up on the rocks.
It shares its chemistry with the Fukiage wild pool down the path: acidic sulphate and chloride water at pH 2.6. Day entry is ¥700, and in a normal season the doors stay open until ten at night.
On 12 September 2026 Tokachidake went to volcanic alert Level 3 and the Fukiage area came under an evacuation order. Hakuginso closed the same day along with its campground and the Fukiage pool, and it hasn't announced a reopening date. If the alert drops this winter, phone the lodge before you drive up.
