The name
Named after Abe no Hirafu
ainu
Hirafu has no Ainu origin. The station and district are named for Abe no Hirafu, the Asuka-era general who the Nihon Shoki says set up an administrative post at Shiribeshi (後方羊蹄) in 658 or 659 during his northern campaigns; where that post stood is disputed. The resort village was part of Kutchan's Yamada district, and its postal address changed to Niseko Hirafu in October 2022.

Hirafu is the village that grew up the slope from the base of Grand Hirafu, and on a January night it barely feels like Japan. Snow comes down sideways under the streetlights on Hirafu-zaka while crowds in rental jackets queue at the food trucks. Half a dozen languages drift out of the bars. The lifts started turning here in 1961. Australians found the snow in the 1990s, and the village has been building ever since.
For riding it is hard to beat. Grand Hirafu links with the other three Niseko United resorts across the top of the mountain, and the lights stay on for night riding from mid-December. When patrol judges conditions safe, the gates at the top of the lifts open onto the Niseko range under the Niseko Rules. Most of the village is a walk from a lift, and the village shuttle covers the rest.
Book dinner before you arrive. In peak weeks the good tables go weeks ahead, and walking in at 19:00 on a Saturday usually ends at a convenience store. Bang Bang is the long-running yakitori izakaya that fills first. Tsubara Tsubara does a good soup curry at a fair price, and Niseko Curry Koya has served lunch from ten seats since 1988. Finish at Bar Gyu+, which you enter through an old Coca-Cola vending machine door that is easy to walk past three times in a snowstorm.
