Furano sits in the middle of Hokkaido far from either coast, so the storms that make it this far have wrung out most of their moisture and the snow lands cold and light. Locals call it fuwa-fuwa yuki (fluffy snow), and it hardly compacts under your boots.
A 101-person ropeway hauls you up the Furano Zone from the New Furano Prince Hotel. Over on the town side, Kitanomine's six-seat gondola runs almost 3 km up from the old ski village, and the H1 run and a connector chair tie the two halves together near the top. Kitanomine closes in late March, and the ropeway side keeps running on spring snow into early May.

The trail map labels every run with a letter and a number, so A3 and K2 are the names you'll know by lunch. A3 drops 1,770 m down the far side of the Furano Zone at up to 30 degrees and holds soft bumps long after the groomers have set up. K2 on Kitanomine is short, and its ungroomed moguls tip to 34 degrees. Patrol opens the Premium Zone next door only when the snowpack allows, and on those days its 830 m of ungroomed fall line is the best powder inside the ropes.
Furano kept its boundary shut for years before it began letting riders out through designated exits, and the rules have tightened again since. In fiscal 2024 the number of people who got into trouble in the forest beside the resort jumped from 3 to 23, and for 2025/26 the resort closed some exits and printed five access points on the map. Each time you head out you hand the resort's climbing-plan form to the nearest patrol hut, then unclip and walk through so nobody follows your track. Patrol can hold your ticket if you skip a step. A drone pad on the roof of the ropeway summit station now helps them find lost parties.
Night laps run until 18:00 on weekdays and 19:30 on weekends from mid-December. Furano town is about 7 km from the Furano Zone base and holds most of the restaurants, and a taxi between the two costs around ¥1,600. If you'd rather walk to dinner, stay in Kitanomine, where pensions and izakaya sit a few minutes from the gondola.

Beyond the ropes · gates
Five designated access points lead out of the ski area, and every outing needs the resort's own climbing-plan form handed to the nearest patrol hut first. The resort closed some exits for 2025/26 after the count of people needing help in the forest beside it jumped from 3 to 23 in fiscal 2024.
- Leave the ski area only through access points 1–5 shown on the trail map
- Hand the designated climbing-plan form (tozan-todoke) to the nearest patrol hut before every exit
- Take your skis or board off and walk through the access point so you leave no track for others to follow
- Check your backcountry kit before you go; patrol recommends a phone or radio and a device that shows your latitude and longitude
- Search and rescue outside the ski area is billed in full to the person rescued
- Patrol can hold the lift ticket of anyone breaking these rules
- Ski patrol direct line: 090-3391-3340; ski area office: 0167-22-1119
Check the daily avalanche report before you leave the resort. Carry a beacon, shovel and probe and know how to use them.
Worth knowing before you go
Fill in a fresh climbing-plan form for every outing and drop it at the patrol hut nearest the access point you plan to use.
Ride A3 first on a storm morning; the far side of the Furano Zone keeps soft bumps well into the afternoon.

Kids of elementary age and younger ride free, though they still need a ticket from the counter.
Book First Tracks by 17:00 a week ahead; the session meets at the ropeway base at 6:00 and drops in at 6:30.
