Kamifurano is a quiet farm town on the road up to Tokachidake Onsen, where the volcano tours start.
Volcanic alert
Tokachidake is at volcanic alert level 3
The Japan Meteorological Agency raised Tokachidake to level 3 on 12 September 2026, which restricts entry around the crater. Fukiage Onsen Hakugin-so and the Fukiage Roten-no-yu outdoor bath are closed, and Ryounkaku has asked guests who couldn't evacuate quickly to stay away for now. Check the JMA bulletin before you plan any tour on the Tokachi range.

ainu
Kami (上) means upper. The town shares the Ainu root of Furano, hura-nu-i, which refers to the sulphur smell of the Furano River coming down from the Tokachidake volcanoes. The town's own hot spring, Furanui Onsen, keeps the older form of the name.

The highest onsen settlement in the range sits at about 1,290 m, where Ryounkaku and Kamihoroso face straight out at the volcano. Both offer day bathing.

Sandan-yama and the surrounding slopes are reached on skins straight from the Tokachidake Onsen car park. Hire a guide unless you know volcanic avalanche terrain.
In January Kamifurano's lavender and potato fields lie under a white grid of snow, with the Tokachidake range smoking on the eastern skyline. The volcano is close enough to matter. In 1926 an eruption sent a mudflow down the valley that killed 144 people, and the town still lives with hazard maps and monitoring. Most riders pass straight through on the climb to Tokachidake Onsen at about 1,290 metres, where the touring starts at the door of the Ryounkaku inn.
Stay down in town if the lodges up the mountain are full or you want a supermarket and a choice of dinner. Teuchi Soba Mansaku makes hand-cut soba for a handful of seats at lunch, and Marumasu is the local place for yakiniku and tonkatsu made with Kamifurano pork. On the way up, Fukiage Roten-no-yu sits in the forest beside the road. Its two natural pools are free, and you strip in the snow.
