Rusutsu is a farm village of two thousand people that has wrapped itself around one of Hokkaido's best tree-riding resorts.

Starlight Avenuewalk
A free 300 m path of about 250,000 lights glows from sunset to 22:00, and a light maze stands in front of the hotel.

The village-run bath, 11:00–21:00 for ¥500. Closed Wednesdays and 1–3 January.
Michi-no-Eki 230 Rusutsumarket
The roadside station on Route 230 sells farm produce and has one of the best roadside views of Yotei.
Rusutsu village is mostly fields and farmhouses, and the resort dwarfs everything else. Three households came here in 1871 with the new Hongan-ji road, which later became Route 230, and the village still sits along that road under Yotei's south flank. In winter the resort hotel towers glow above the snowfields, and the Starlight Avenue of about a quarter of a million bulbs runs from sunset to 22:00.
Most people stay inside the resort and never leave, which is a mistake. Drive a few minutes into Izumikawa for Mokumoku-ya, where thick-cut fresh lamb goes onto the grill and they take cash only. Hitsuji-chan down the road does hot pots and Genghis Khan sets every winter night. The village runs its own onsen for ¥500, and the Michi-no-Eki on Route 230 sells Rusutsu pork skewers with a full view of Yotei.

No railway. The Big Runs Go bus from New Chitose Airport takes about two hours and costs ¥5,000 booked online (¥5,500 otherwise), running 28 November 2026 to 30 March 2027. The Rusutsu Express from Sapporo takes about 105 minutes for ¥3,000. Driving from Sapporo or the airport takes about 90 minutes.
