Where should you stay in Niseko?
Six bases sit around the same mountain, and each one changes what your evenings look like. Here's who each base suits and how you get between them.
By Adam BognarPublished
Hirafu is the base for most first trips to Niseko, because you can walk to the Grand Hirafu lifts and to most of the valley's restaurants and bars. Families who want a ski-in hotel and a calmer evening do better at Hanazono or Niseko Village, and riders who'd swap nightlife for onsen and short lift lines should look at Annupuri or Moiwa. Book dinner tables in Hirafu weeks ahead for peak season, and plan on a shuttle or a taxi for evenings out from anywhere else.
We compared six bases on lift access, night riding, evenings, transport and the stays in our guide, and we list a rate wherever the property published one. Kutchan is the budget option on the valley floor.

Why do most visitors start in Hirafu?
Hirafu puts the lifts and the restaurants inside one walkable village. Two gondolas pull out of the village at 8:30, and Grand Hirafu's lower mountain stays lit from 16:00 to 19:00 from mid-December to late March. The day ticket carries straight into the night session. Hirafu village holds Bang Bang's yakitori and Tsubara Tsubara's soup curry. Niseko Curry Koya has served lunch from ten seats since 1988, and Bar Gyu+ hides behind an old vending-machine door.
Ski-in stays sit at the top of the village. Skye Niseko lets you slide from its valet doors to the King Gondola, and Ki Niseko stands about ten metres from it with an onsen that opens at 4 a.m. Families do well at The Vale and AYA Niseko. Both sit on the Ace Family run a minute from the quad. Setsu Niseko is a five-to-ten-minute walk from the gondola, and its free shuttle loops every 20 minutes.
Walking in for dinner at 19:00 on a Saturday in peak weeks usually ends at a convenience store, and Grand Hirafu scores 1 out of 5 on our crowd rating.
Who should stay at Hanazono?
Hanazono suits families and anyone who wants a ski-in hotel with the lifts outside the door. The Park Hyatt has a ski valet on the snow and the beginner area spreads out below it, so a family can split after breakfast and meet again at Hanazono 308 for lunch. It also allows guests with tattoos in its onsen. Nikko Style Niseko HANAZONO opened next door in December 2024 with a natural hot spring and a club lounge for less. Zaborin sets fifteen ryokan villas in the forest below the resort. Each villa has its own spring-fed baths, and the ryokan holds two Michelin Keys.
Every night out means a shuttle or a taxi. The free Hanazono shuttle runs to the Hirafu Welcome Center about every 20 minutes until 19:28, and Hirafu is 15 to 20 minutes away.
What is Niseko Village like as a base?
Niseko Village is a hotel resort on the south side of the mountain, and storm days there mean gladed laps below the Niseko Gondola. The Hilton Niseko Village stands beside that gondola, and its outdoor onsen sits by a carp pond facing Yotei. Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve keeps 50 rooms about 400 metres from the gondola, and the Niseko Village Kids Club takes children from 18 months to nine years. The Green Leaf reopens on 1 December 2026 after a refit, and Kasara's townhouses give a group of six their own front door. Budget riders take Freeride Lodge and walk eight minutes to the Banzai lift.
Evenings run to hotel bars and the shops along Niseko-Yo. The gondola queue reaches about 20 minutes between Christmas and late January and around Chinese New Year.
Who should stay at Annupuri?
Annupuri suits riders who want onsen evenings and Niseko United's cheapest single-resort ticket. A 2025/26 day there cost ¥7,000. Niseko Northern Resort An'nupuri sits on the slopes with 151 rooms and a hot spring with self-pour saunas, and it bars guests with tattoos from its baths. Yugokorotei is a 17-room inn below the lifts where the spring comes out at 49°C, and overnight guests can use the outdoor bath at any hour. Its free shuttle to Annupuri takes three minutes if you reserve it.
Annupuri scores 4 for quiet in our ratings. The drawback is food, because dinner means the hotel restaurant or a drive.
Is Moiwa a good base?
Moiwa is a good base for powder riders who don't need a village. Lodge Moiwa 834 stands across from the Moiwa lifts with capsules about 1.3 m wide and a restaurant called Raphael. Down the road in the Konbu Onsen cluster, Hotel Kanronomori welcomes tattooed bathers and has rooms with their own hot spring tubs. Tsuruga Besso Moku no Sho is a 24-room ryokan whose free ski shuttle loops to Moiwa, Annupuri, the Hilton and the Hirafu Welcome Center if you book it by 20:00 the night before.
Moiwa sells its own ticket outside Niseko United, so a week here means paying twice for any day on the big mountain. Kanronomori's ski shuttle was still listed as in preparation for 2026/27, and a car makes life much easier on this side.
Does staying in Kutchan save money?
Kutchan saves money on rooms and food in exchange for a bus ride to the lifts. Hotel Three M sits a minute from JR Kutchan Station with official rates from ¥9,500 for a single and ¥16,500 for a twin. MaxValu and Coop cost far less than the Hirafu convenience stores, and the town's restaurants feed people who live here: Kage for yakitori, Eijin for grilled lamb, Nakama for late shio ramen and Yuki Tei for kamaage udon on a cold day.
The bus to Hirafu takes about 20 minutes. Taxis can't be hailed on the street, and at peak hours the wait at the station runs 30 to 60 minutes.
How do you get between the bases?
The free Niseko United shuttle links Hirafu with Niseko Village and Annupuri for All Mountain pass holders, and it ran from 29 November 2025 to 5 April 2026. Hirafu's village shuttle runs three loops every 20 to 30 minutes. In Niseko town the on-demand Nikotto bus costs ¥200 with a booking, and Kutchan's Jagarin-go loop costs ¥100. Our guide to Hokkaido without a car covers the airport buses.
How we compared
We read the resorts' night-riding and access pages, their ticket prices, the stays' own websites and the Ride Hokkaido town and stay files in October 2026. Rates are the published or listed figures for the date shown. Most date from January 2024, and they move with the season, so use them to judge the gap between stays. Crowd scores out of 5 are our editorial ratings. The method is desk research, and nobody stayed at these properties for this page.
